💍 Top 10 Tips for a Perfect Engagement Shoot

Updated: Apr 16

So you’ve booked your engagement session—yay! Now you're wondering: What do we wear? Where do we go?How do I pose my hands?!

Take a deep breath, lovebirds. I’ve got you covered with 10 easy (and slightly cheeky) tips to make your engagement shoot look and feel amazing.

1. Pick a Location That Feels Like You

Don’t just pick a random park because it’s “popular.” Choose a spot that means something—first date, favorite coffee shop, rooftop views, your couch (kidding… unless your couch is really cute).

  • Snuggling on a picnic blanket

  • Walking hand-in-hand somewhere you actually hang out

2. Golden Hour = Photo Superpower

Want that soft, glowy, "straight outta Pinterest" vibe? Shoot during golden hour—right before sunset when the light is basically made of magic and dreams. Bonus: fewer squinty eyes.

  • Sunlight beaming through trees

  • That kiss-with-a-glow moment

3. Dress Like You're Meeting Beyoncé (but Still You)

Don’t overthink it. Wear something that feels you, but elevated—like you’re meeting Queen B and want your partner to fall in love with you all over again.Avoid neon colors, logos, or anything you’ll cringe at in 10 years.

  • Two outfit options: dressy & casual

  • Spinning in a flowy dress = ✨ instant magic

4. Yes, You Can Get Glammed Up

Makeup trial day? Perfect excuse. Want to feel like a Vogue cover couple? Get a blowout or a fresh fade. Confidence looks great in photos—and so does a little highlighter glow ✨

  • Hair flip mid-laugh

  • Makeup close-up with a cheeky grin

5. Bring Props (or Puppies... or Both) - (Optional)

Champagne, your dog, vintage bikes, pizza—yes, props are welcome and encouraged. They help break the ice and make it feel more you. Plus, dogs = automatic 10/10 photos.

  • Popping a bottle

  • Puppy in a bowtie (you’re welcome)

6. Don’t Worry About Posing—That’s My Job

“Where do I put my hands?” – everyone, at some point. I’ll guide you the whole time. No awkward prom poses, promise. Just prompts, movement, and a lot of “omg that was cute, do that again!”

  • Walking shots

  • Candid laughs (the best ones come when you think I’m not shooting 👀)

7. Choose Your Vibe and Roll With It

Dreamy meadow? Urban-chic rooftop? Moody & romantic in the woods? Pick a vibe and run with it. The more you lean in, the more your photos pop with personality.

  • Styled session to match the vibe

  • Outfit/location combos that sing

8. Trust the Process (and Trust Me)

It might feel weird at first—yes, I’m pointing a big camera at your face. But trust me, it gets fun fast. Once we get rolling, you’ll be too busy giggling and kissing to care.

  • Sneaky in-between moments

  • You mid-laugh, mid-twirl, mid-“okay this is actually fun”

9. Bring a Second Outfit (Because, Options)

Want both cozy and glam vibes in one session? Bring a quick outfit change. It's like a mini fashion show, minus the pressure. Bonus: more content for your wedding website and the ‘Gram.

  • Casual jeans + fancy dress

  • Shoe swap moment = great BTS shot

10. Be Yourselves & Have Fun

This is not a modeling competition. It's a celebration of your weird, wonderful, real love. Dance in a field, steal kisses, make silly faces. The more fun you have, the better the photos.

  • The bloopers

  • Your personalities shining through

💌 Bonus Tip: How Long Should This Actually Take?

Real talk: you don’t need a 4-hour marathon session to get stunning photos.

60-90 minutes is the sweet spot. Long enough to warm up and get a killer set of images. Short enough to avoid outfit fatigue, hunger meltdowns, or someone yelling “Are we done yet?!”
